Sunny Park came to Australia with her mother
and sister when she was 2 years old. At times it was a struggle
to make ends meet for her family, but they did what they could.
When she was 14, her mother took her to a driving range for
the first time, and she fell in love with the sport, dedicating
herself to the goal of one day turning pro and playing on
the LPGA tour.
Over the next few years, Sunny became one
of the top amateur golfers in the country. She won numerous
titles, including twice capturing the women's foursome title,
but by far her biggest win came at the 2007 Australian Amateur.
Trailing Australia's number one amateur, Elizabeth Bennett,
by five holes after 17 played, Sunny came roaring back, winning
the title in 38 holes.
Sunny turned pro later that year and joined
the Australian Ladies Golf Tour, a minor league tour that
plays down under during November through January. It didn't
take her long to make a splash there: she won the Peugeot
Kangaroo Valley ALPG Classic in mid-January, 2008. She beat
Bree Turnbull on the first playoff hole to capture the title.
Park played on the Futures Tour in 2009, but
was not able to maintain status for 2010. From 2011 through
early 2015, she played mostly in Australia on the ALPG tour,
but has had little success there for the most part. She seems
to have retired.
