Road to the LPGA: Lee plays on the KLPGA

Capsule Bio

Jung Min Lee made a name for herself as a long hitting junior before turning pro and joining the KLPGA as a 2010 rookie. Her most notable amateur accomplishment was to win the 2008 Polo Junior Championship over Korean American Jenny Shin. Many consider Lee, who frequently hits the ball over 300 yards off the tee, a superstar in the making.

Lee struggled for the most part in her first professional season, but had one spectacular achievement: she won the Doosan Match Play event on the KLPGA. During that week, she faced and beat top players Hee Kyung Seo, Bo Mee Lee and Hyun Hee Moon.

Lee really struggled in 2011. She missed a bunch of cuts, and had only one top ten all year, a 6th place. As a result, she finished only 66th on the money list with just over 43 million won earned. There was good news, fortunately: she had a new clothing sponsor, Beanpole Golf, to help her pay the bills.

Lee returned to her top level in 2012. In April, she achieved a third place finish in just her second event played that year. In August, she notched a runner-up finish at the LIG Classic. But finally, with just a few events left in the year, she broke into the winner's circle for the second time, capturing the Seokyung Ladies Open for her first win in two and a half years.

In all, Lee finished 6th on the 2012 KLPGA money list, making ~336 million won and earning six top tens on the year.

Lee had a weaker 2013 season. She finished 23rd on the money list with about 175 million won earned. She had five top tens, her best finish a tie for second at the Kumho Tires Ladies Open in July.

Lee had a career best season in 2014. She won twice and earned over 659 million won, which placed her third on the year-ending money list. She had 14 top tens. Interestingly, she started the season poorly, missing three straight cuts at one point. Beginning at the Korean Women's Open, however, she notched 6 straight top tens, including a second at the Hanwha Classic and a win at the Kyochon Honey Chicken Ladies Open. After her second win at the YTN Volvik Women's Open, she had a runner-up at the Hite Cup and four other top fives in the latter half of the year.

Lee also played well at the LPGA's Hana Bank Championship, where she contended early before fading to a tie for 35th finish.

Lee had an even better 2015 season; for a time, she was neck and neck with top player In Gee Chun for all the top awards on tour. She hit her biggest stride in May, when she won three of four tournaments she played. She also had two runner-up finishes in two of the year's four Majors. She had 11 top tens in total and made over 640 million won, which placed her third on the money list.

Lee also played a little bit on the LPGA tour in 2015. She had decent finishes at the US Women's Open (t-35th) and the British Women's Open, where her tie for 21st was her career best on the LPGA.

In 2016, Lee started the year with a bang, winning the Mission Hills Women's World Championship, a jointly sponsored event by the KLPGA and LET. However, she missed the cuts in all the other non-KLPGA events she played that season, including two Majors and the Dubai Ladies Masters in December.

On the KLPGA, Jung Min had one of her weaker seasons. She finished 21st on the money list with 275 million won earned. She had 7 top tens, but almost all of them came before before June. In summer and Fall, she missed a bunch of cuts and generally struggled, although her final event of the season, the ADT Caps, saw her finish 8th.

Lee returned to action in May of 2017. It was one of her weaker seasons. She finished just 81st on the money list, earning only 66 million won. Her best finish was a third.

Lee had another OK but not great year in 2018. She finished 28th on the money list with nearly 220 million won earned. She had four top tens, including a season best finish of second place.

Lee played slightly better in 2019. She finished 16th on the money list that year, with over 381 million won earned. She had six top tens including a runner up finish at the Hanwha Classic, which alone earned her nearly 100 million won.

Jung Min also played at the OrangeLife KLPGA/LPGA team event. She teamed with Da Yeon Lee to square a match against the LPGA's Amy Yang and Mi Hyang Lee, and also squared when teamed with Ji Young Kim against So Yeon Ryu and Inbee Park. She skipped the singles. The KLPGA won 15-9.

In 2020, the world was hit with the Covid19 pandemic. All sports leagues, including the LPGA and KLPGA, were massively affected by it; many events were canceed or shifted around the schedule, and fans were forbidden from attending. Jung Min managed to play a full schedule on the KLPGA anyways. She earned around 171 million won for the year, 24th on the money list. Her best finishes were a third and a fourth.

Jung Min had a fantastic 2021 season. She earned 558 million won, 10th on the money list. She had 7 top tens, including a runner up at the BC Card and a third at the Korea Women's Open. She also had a third at the year's final Major, the KB Star. But in the Fall, she did even better, grabbing her first win in many years at the Dongboo Construction Koreit Championship, the year's only event scored with the Stableford system.

Jung Min had a weaker year in 2022. She only earned about 100 million won, 84th on the money list. Her best finish all year was a 10th. But when she played the December events that count towards the 2023 season, she did great, winning the PLK Championship in Vietnam. A strong start for her 2023 campaign!

Lee did not win again in 2023 but did have three top tens during the season including the win. She earned 330 million won for the year, 32nd on the money list.
