Capsule Bio

Gyeol Park was a top amateur golfer in Korea as a teenager. She made her biggest splash by winning the gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games, which happened to take place that year in Inchon, South Korea. She turned pro the following season and joined the KLPGA.

For the next few years, Park had good results on tour, but no wins. She finished 22nd on the money list in her rookie year, 31st in 2016, and 21st in 2017.

Gyeol Park finally had her breakout first career win in 2018. She surprised everyone by shooting a final round 66 at the SK Networks event to come from way behind and capture the win. She also had two runner up finishes and a third that year. She finished 14th on the money list with over 380 million won earned.

Park was already very popular with the fans, but her win pushed her to the next level. In 2019, she signed a lucrative sponsorship deal with Footjoy, and was featured in both Golf Digest Korea (she was also on the cover) and Golf For Women Korea magazine. She only had a middling season, however. She finished 56th on the money list with 115 million won earned. She had just two top tens: a 6th and a 7th. Still, it was enough to maintain her tour status, and in 2020 she was once again named as one of the spokesmodels for the KLPGA.

In 2020, the whole world was rocked by the Covid-19 pandemic. The LPGA and KLPGA tours canceled and postponed many tournaments. Gyeol finished 49th on the 2020 KLPGA money list, with about 105 million won earned. She achieved a pair of 6th place finishes, her only top tens of the season.

In 2021, Gyeol struggled a bit more. She had one top ten, a 9th place. She finished 69th on the money list with a little over 101 million won earned. She snapped back somewhat in 2022. That year she made 195 million won, finishing 45th on the money list. She had two early top tens, including a third at the Nexen Saint Nine Masters.

Perhaps the strangest thing that happened to Gyeol in 2022 had little to do with her. A gossip columnist started a rumor that Rain, the pop star married to top Korean star Kim Tae Hee, was having an affair with a professional golfer who looked like his wife. Since Gyeol is sometimes compared to Kim, she started getting a ton of attention from the gossip rags, who thought she was the golfer Rain was seeing. She eventually had to go on Instagram to deny the rumor. Fortunately it died down after that.

Gyeol had a better season in 2023. Although she did not win, she did contend a few times. She earned 396 million won for the year, 26th on the money list. She had a second and a third place finish and 4 total top tens.
