Capsule Bio

Char Young Kim 2 joined the KLPGA in 2010 and immediately made an impact (she uses the '2' in her name because she is the second player named Char Young Kim on tour). Although she did not win the Rookie of the Year award, she still finished 14th on the money list and compiled 7 top tens during the season. Her best finish was a second place at the Daewoo Classic.

At the start of 2011, she has attracted a lot of attention in the Korean media. She was featured in a pictorial in a top magazine, and was signed by Nefs to a two year sponsorship deal. She had a good season in 2011, finishing 19th on the money list with 6 top tens. Her best finishes were two 4th places.

Char Young had her breakout season in 2012. Her first win came in May at the Woori Investment & Securities Ladies Championship. She shot a second round 65 to take a share of the lead, then fought tooth and nail with Mirim Lee, who climbed to a three shot lead towards the end of the day. But Kim made three late birdies to catch her, then beat Lee in a playoff to claim the trophy.

The next week, Kim won again. The event was the Doosan Match Play, always one of the toughest events on tour. Kim worked her way through the field, beating Yu Na Park in the quarters and Ji Na Lim in the semis before winning a tight match 2 & 1 against 2011 Rookie of the Year Yeon Ju Jung in the finals. The win moved her to the top of the tour money list.

After the summer break, Kim won a third tournament in 2012 at the Hidden Valley Open. She topped KLPGA star Soo Jin Yang, the second round leader, for a two shot victory. Kim went on to finish third on the money list with the most wins on tour that year. She made about 417 million won. She had four other top tens besides her wins, including a third at the season-ending ADT-CAPS. In December, she paired with Na Yeon Choi at the Korea-Japan Team Championship to win a match and tied her singles match with Mayu Hattori.

Kim ended 2012 with a tie for 17th at the Swinging Skirts in Taiwan, an event where she faced most of the world's top golfers.

Kim cooled down considerably in the 2013 season. She played two events in America, including the US Women's Open, but missed the cut in both. She didn't win in Korea, making about 101 million won during the year, which placed her 36th on the money list. She had only one top ten all year, a tie for third at the Rush and Cash Classic.

Kim earned around 150 million won in the 2014 season, finishing 30th on the KLPGA money list. She had four top tens (three of which were top fives), her best being a 3rd place at the Nefs Masterpiece.

In 2015, Kim had another solid year, but once again a win eluded her. She finished 34th on the money list with 162 million won earned. Her best finish was a third place, but she also made it into the final four at the Doosan Match Play, where she finished 4th.

2016 was a weaker season for Char Young. She finished 57th on the KLPGA money list. She had only one top ten, at the limited field Dalat Ladies Championship early in the year in Vietnam. She finished 4th. She made around 111 million won for the season.

Char Young had a comeback season in 2017. The highlight of the year was her win at the Doosan Match Play, an event she has already won and finished in the final four at in previous years. Even more incredibly, her win came against Korean superstar Inbee Park, who was looking for her first ever KLPGA victory only to be thwarted by Kim. Kim battled hard all week, winning several early rounds on the final hole or in playoffs. In the finals, she defeated Inbee 3 & 2. It was Kim's first KLPGA win since 2012.

Kim finished 11th on the tour money list, with over 411 million won earned for the season. She had five additional top tens besides her win, including a runner up finish at the event the week before the Doosan Match Play.

Her great season earned her a spot at the Kowa Queens event representing the KLPGA. This year, they changed the order of the tournament, with the singles taking place in round 2. Char Young destroyed Cathryn Bristow of New Zealand 6 & 5 in her singles match. But in the finals, Japan beat Korea, with Char Young pairing with Jin Young Ko for a half against the Japanese team.

Char Young also represented the KLPGA against the LPGA at the Inbee Park ING Champions. The KLPGA pulled off the upset win, with Kim and Jeong Eun Lee 6 squaring their match against In Gee Chun and Eun Hee Ji, and losing against Eun Hee and Sei Young Kim when paired with Hye Jin Choi. She tied Eun Hee when they played in singles.

Char Young finished 24th on the KLPGA money list in 2018. She had no wins, one runner up and 7 total top tens. At the end of the year, she played for the KLPGA team at the OrangeLife Champions Trophy event. She teamed with Ji Young Kim in a loss to Eun Hee Ji and Minjee Lee, and squared a singles match against Lydia Ko. The LPGA won the event 13-11.

Kim's 2019 season was similar. She finished 28th on the money list with 238 million won earned. She had five top tens during the season, including a runner-up finish at the Bogner MBN Women's Open.

In 2020, the world was hit with the Covid19 pandemic. All sports leagues, including the LPGA and KLPGA, were massively affected by it; many events were canceled or shifted around the schedule, and fans were forbidden from attending. Char Young made just 75 million won in 2020, 66th on the money list. She had one top ten, a 6th place. She was not able to keep a full tour card for 2021, and decided to take a year off to prepare to return to the KLPGA in 2022.

She did not play at all in 2021, but she also did not enter Qualifying School. Hence she had no status for 2022, and it was not clear what her plans were. In early 2023, however, she gave an interview where she admitted that she had decided to retire after being away from the game for a while. It's still possible she will have some sort of retirement ceremony, one last goodbye for the fans, but nothing is planned.
