Four shots over Jeong Jang
She Won: $210,000
The Scoop:
Soo-Yun Kang started on a great note by shooting an 8 under par 64 in nearly perfect conditions to take a share of the first round lead with Korean rookie Sung Ah Yim. In round 2, she played in an all Korean group with Yim and Hee-Won Han, the defending champion. Once again, she played superbly, notching a 4 under par 68 to take the lead by 3 shots going into Sunday. Again on the final day, she played in an all Korean final against Gloria Park and Jeong Jang, who had won the previous LPGA tournament, the British Women's Open. Kang played a nearly flawless round, scoring several birdies early and cruising to an easy 4 shot win, her first on the LPGA tour. She was greeted on the 18th green by numerous Korean friends, including Birdie Kim and Grace Park, who doused her in victory champagne. Soo-Yun led an unprecedented sweep of five of the top six spots on the leaderboard by Korean golfers, with Jang finishing second, Gloria Park finishing third, Joo Mi Kim 4th and Sung Ah Yim tied for fifth.
