Part I: Saturday (continued)

After Se Ri was done I backtracked to find Grace and Soo Yun, who were playing together. I caught up with them as they were coming off the 16th green. I was happy to see Grace had moved back to 2 under par (she had slipped at one point to 1 over, notching two bogeys during the worst of the rain shower), and Soo Yun to 1 under.

Hole 17: (par 3)
Grace hit an OK tee shot but it was maybe 30 feet right of the hole. Kang absolutely nailed her tee shot to maybe a foot, provoking oohs and ahhs from the people watching around the green. But Grace made the birdie anyway; it was a fantastic putt. Kang then tapped hers in. The Seoul Sisters were on fire!

Hole 18: (Par 5)
Both hit good drives, Grace a little farther but not much. In the high 250s range I would guess. As they walked up the fairway, Grace and Soo Yun goofed off, Soo Yun putting her fingers in Grace's ears or something. It's obvious they like each other, which is cool to see. I was surprised that Kang laid up here. Grace waited for the green to clear, then smoked her second. Unfortunately, she put her shot to the left. There is water there, but she cleared that and ended up in some rough. This was not an easy place to be; she had a tree to contend with so she had to be careful how she hit her third. The flag was on the back of the green. But she hit a superlative chip/pitch up to a few feet from the flag, then drained her birdie. Great great shot. That moved her to 4 under and a tie with Se Ri. Kang, meanwhile, put her third right next to the hole, but it had spin and rolled backwards 35 feet. What a gyp! The crowd went crazy around the green, so I was expecting another tap in for her. She put her birdie putt into tap in range and made par, but a final birdie would have been cool.

I was hoping for a Se Ri/Grace pairing, as they both had ended up at 4 under, but it didn't happen alas!

After that, I left for the day. It's a pity I didn't know that just fifteen minutes later, Se Ri had a press conference in the media tent. Had I known, I would surely have attended it.

A couple notes on the media coverage. The media covered the tournament pretty thoroughly. Though most of the coverage focused on the Canadian players (you would think Isabelle Beisiegel, a Canadian player who was briefly in the top ten, had won the gold medal the way she was all over the papers and TV on Saturday), the Seoul Sisters got nice coverage, too. There were two different 24 page inserts in two different papers. One had the top contenders for the prize. The player with the biggest picture in that feature was Grace (yes, bigger than Se Ri or Annika). When I say big, I mean her picture was half the size of the page, and everyone else's was a thumbnail. There were also two articles about the Korean players, in which Grace was prominently mentioned.
