Political Commentary

Se Ri Pak is more than just a golfer in South Korea. When she won two Majors in 1998, during the depths of Korea's financial crisis, it made a statement to the nation that they, too, could beat the odds and come out on top. Similarly, her recent comeback from two years of woes to win the LPGA Championship had similar resonance in her home country, only this time the lesson was, no matter how far down you get, redemption is possible.

In this political cartoon, Se Ri's comeback is used to comment on the woes of the Uri Party, one of the political parties in South Korea. The speaker believes it will be difficult for the Uri Party to make a comeback from the setbacks they have suffered in recent years. The implication is that, as tough as Se Ri's road back was, it was still not as hard as this political party's road back will be. Se Ri's efforts can be used as shorthand by the cartoonist, because her story is such a well known and respected one among her country people.
